How I Met Your Mother
3x02 We're Not From Here

Misfits
1x01 Episode One
You don't get much more E4 than this: Heroes meets Skins -- with extra ASBOs. Naturally, this being E4, you'd expect it to err towards the latter two elements, thus making it distinctly less... how shall I put this... good. Surprisingly, however, there's a pleasantly strong dash of the former. In fairness, this may just be because it's the first episode, meaning extra time is devoted to the setup, but we can keep our fingers crossed it continues in this vein. It's also genuinely funny, rather than the usual funny-if-you-have-no-brain level 'humour' churned out for this intended audience. A nice surprise; one worth keeping an eye on.

Wallander [Swedish]
1x01 Innan Frosten (aka Before the Frost)
BBC Four have been showing the original Swedish series of Wallander for a while now. It's rather different to the British version: more normal drama, less slow-paced coldly-shot faux-Swedish. There's also a greater focus on his daughter -- based on this episode alone, she seems to be more the main character than he is! Different, then, but still good.
[Due to its original theatrical release, this also counts as #74 in 100 Films in a Year 2009. Read my full review here.]

Wallander is on the case again, in six new Mankell thrillers
by Jorn Rossing Jensen (from Cineuropa)

Swedish actor Krister Henriksson has embarked on his third assignment as Ystad Detective Inspector Kurt Wallander - the lonely, slightly overweight, but excellent crime investigator - in an €11.3 milllion package of six thrillers based on Swedish author Henning Mankell's character...

Swedish director Agneta Fagerström-Olsson last week (May 28) started principal photography for The Troubled Man, from Mankell's tenth and last Wallander novel... The Troubled Man will be released theatrically, while the five following films will go straight to television-home entertainment.

Despite this news being months old, I've only just stumbled across it. Very exciting it is too. Hopefully BBC Four will pick them up once they're all done.

This episode starts ridiculously (seriously, if you found a lizard that big in your house, would you flush it down the toilet? I wouldn't) and doesn't improve. Business as usual then.

Swingin' Christmas
Something a bit different for Christmas, even if only a handful of songs were specifically Christmassy, and (one might argue) most of the others weren't well enough known. Still, a nice idea and an entertaining hour-and-a-half. The website includes a full list of songs performed, including details of what's in the medleys.

Wallander [film series]
The Man Who Smiled (aka Mannen som log)
The other Swedish Wallander: between 1994 and 2007, Rolf Lassgård starred in nine TV movies adapting Henning Mankell's novels -- i.e. the stories also being used for the Branagh series (the other Swedish Wallander adapted a Linda Wallander novel followed by original stories).
This, the first BBC Four have brought to the UK, is the sixth film, from 2003, which was adapted by the British series as the second episode of series two. This version is rather different to the British -- the ending is completely changed, for one thing -- and, having already seen two actors portray the role, Lassgård takes some getting used to. He's not bad, though he feels more like your standard TV detective than the more unusual stylings Branagh and Henriksson brought. Plus, although he was the first actor to play the part, he's perhaps come too late to the party for British viewers.

Have I Got News For You
39x03 (15/4/10 edition; extended repeat)
I had a specific comment to make about this episode, but it's completely gone now. Just watch it, laugh lots, and I'm sure you'll've seen whatever it was I had to say.

Russell Howard's Good News
2x04 (15/4/10 edition)
Despite setting a recording for the extended repeat, it seems BBC Three did Something Funny and I wound up with the last 20 minutes of Herbie-whatever-with-Lindsay-Lohan and a half-an-hour-early edition of Family Guy. There's no explanation for this that I can find.

Wallander [Swedish]
2x01 Hämnden (aka The Revenge)
The Swedish Wallander series returns for its second and reportedly final series. This episode was originally released in cinemas, so counts as #40 on 100 Films in a Year 2010. Click here to read my review.

You Have Been Watching
2x01 (15/4/10 edition)
Hurrah for another excellent programme returning.
This edition featured clips from Spartacus: Blood and Sand, a series I'd been a little looking forward to because it looked like it might be Rome Mark 2. Sadly, this appears to not be the case. Where Rome was high-budget and underpinned its sex and violence with an awful lot of character and intelligence, Spartacus: BS (the most apt title abbreviation) has CGI in every scene that's so bad it makes everything look like a 15-year-old computer game. The quality of the script and acting suggest they've been dragged from the same.

Wallander: Sidetracked

The BBC plays at ITV's game, adapting a series of detective novels into a TV series, with feature-length episodes, named after the lead character.

The difference here is, these are Swedish novels set in Sweden -- and filmed there too -- starring Distinguished Actor Kenneth Branagh. (Incidentally, the Swedes have already produced a film series (adapting the novels) and a TV series (with new stories) featuring the character. It's interesting to note how different he looks in each version; and you can see for yourself on screen when BBC Four screen some of the Swedish Wallander films next week.)

It's certainly 'grim up North' -- or, indeed, grim up Norse -- ho ho ho! Anyway, it's grim, and slow-paced in a measured, thoughtful kind of way. Big mistake in casting someone fairly well known in a tiny role though, especially when all the other small roles are filled by unknowns -- they may as well be wearing a T-shirt saying "I did it". That aside, it's quite good, though based on comments in one of the many issues of Radio Times out at the minute (whichever one covers Wallander's final ep), the unrelentingly downbeat style might get a tad wearing.

One other element I was uncertain of: the conclusion of the main plot. It seems like your usual "hero does the Right Thing" moment, but things are a bit more complicated than that in this instance, and the possible ramifications of what Wallander did aren't touched upon. A bit of a missed beat considering the more intelligent, considered and complex approach this particular crime drama seems to be taking when compared to the straightforward black-and-white ones ITV churns out.

Also, I have no idea what the title had to do with anything.

Wallander [Swedish]
2x13 Vittnet (aka The Witness) [series finale]
A pretty low-key and regular last-ever-episode, even by Wallander's standards. And actually, by Wallander's standards, it wasn't up to much as an episode, sadly. Still, an appropriate ending: in no way definite or overly sentimental, but clearly The End. That, at least, was nicely done.

Wallander [British]
3x01 An Event in Autumn
2½ years since the last British Wallander, Kenneth Branagh's more-prone-to-tears interpretation of the Swedish detective is back, this time with an adaptation of a short story. There are only so many novels for them to do, so clearly they're branching out before they run out. It's good stuff still though.
(Saying that, according to Branagh in this article, he hopes for another series adapting the two remaining full-length novels and then leave it at that. Hopefully they'll be able to do that much, then.)
(Also, it's coming up to two years since I last watched any of the longest-running Swedish Wallander! God, time flies.)

2x09 Dödsängeln (aka The Angel of Death)
It's rare that mystery dramas can pull off a genuinely unforeseen twist that works these days (as much as anything because often everyone's a potential suspect), but it's pretty late in the game that one gets an inkling in this Wallander. A strong episode on the whole, in fact.

2x05 Cellisten (aka The Cellist)
One of the more interesting things about Wallander is how it can do an episode about the Russian mafia, featuring car bombs and multiple murders, and still feel resolutely low-key. It has a knack for making the improbable feel almost real.

Doctor Who
31x10 Vincent and the Doctor
A surprisingly excellent and brave episode. Well done on Richard Curtis for not shying away from Van Gogh's depression and suicide, particularly at the end, having the encounter with Amy & the Doctor not making it all alright. All credit to Tony Curran for pulling it off with a great performance too. Also, to Curtis again, for featuring a monster that was introduced late, dealt with early, and seemed to exist to support the characters and story rather than the other way round. Also, appropriate for the BBC to put the Action Line number up at the end, signalling the importance of what had just been covered.

Buzzcocks Extra
These little extra bits have been on the BBC Red Button throughout this series of Buzzcocks, but I've never bothered to look at them before. I don't know if this is typical of what they offer, but in this week's team captains Phill Jupitus and Noel Fielding discuss a variety of "Christmas debates", like Santa vs Santana, snowmen vs Snow Patrol and Slade vs sleighs (please note that they didn't all begin with 'S').
