Films

Model Shop (1969)
[#106 in 100 Films in a Year 2019]

Introduced by Quentin Tarantino, in conversation with film expert Kim Morgan, as part of a series of films (dubbed the "Swinging Sixties Movie Marathon") that have been selected by QT because they have some bearing on his latest movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is out in the UK next week. There's another instalment on the Sony Movie Channel every night this week, with two on Saturday and Sunday. (This is a package they've sold worldwide, which contains ten films, but we're only getting nine in the UK, I presume for rights reasons.)

Films

The Favourite (2018)
[#105 in 100 Films in a Year 2019]

this week on 100 Films

A new month began on Thursday, so it was once again time for 100 Films in a Year to look back at the month that was...

And it was also the time of the month when I turn my attention to the small screen...

And there was 1 new film review, too...

FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992)
it's pretty heavy on the environmental messaging. I seem to remember that was all viewed as being kinda-loony eco stuff back when the film came out. Now, of course, acceptance of those views is much wider, and what the film has to say seems a little obvious. Though we’re still destroying the planet, so I guess we’ve not learned that much in the three decades since.

More next Sunday.

Films

Dumbo (2019)
[#104 in 100 Films in a Year 2019]

Collection Count

Collection Count tracks my DVD/Blu-ray collection via a number of statistics every week.

This week’s additions are a new release in 3D and a DVD-to-UHD upgrade. The latter is Black Hawk Down, which apparently didn’t even look that great on Blu-ray, while the 4K release is stunning, so leaping from DVD to 4K should provide a very nice improvement indeed. (Not that I’ve watched the DVD since about 2002...)

Number of titles in collection: 2,241 [up 1]
Of which DVDs: 1,131 [down 1]
Of which Blu-rays: 1,110 [up 2]
— of which Ultra HD Blu-rays: 32 [up 1]

Number of discs in collection: 5,829 [up 3]
Number of films: 2,573 [up 2]
Number of TV episodes: 8,637 [no change]
Number of short films: 671 [no change]

See you next week, faithful reader.

Tuesday, 30 July 2019

TV

Agatha Raisin
1x04 The Potted Gardener [2nd watch]

Year of the Rabbit
1x06 Episode 6 [season finale]
I hope this comes back for a second series -- it was great fun, and it ended on a tantalising tease for more.
[Watch the entire series (again) on All 4.]

Monday, 29 July 2019

TV

Have I Got News For You
56x06 (9/11/18 edition; extended repeat)
[Watch the extended version (again) on iPlayer.]

How to Break into the Elite
Not necessarily what it sounds like. Rather than some kind of twisted self-help guide, it was an insightful look at how big a (negative) role class still places in the hiring practices of wealthy companies.
[Watch it (again) on iPlayer.]

The Twilight Zone
1x07 The Lonely

University Challenge
2019/20 Episode 3
[Watch it (again) on iPlayer.]

Year of the Rabbit
1x04 Episode 4
1x05 Episode 5
[Watch the entire series (again) on All 4.]

Films

The Lion King (2019)
[#103 in 100 Films in a Year 2019]

Sherlock Jr. (1924)
[#102 in 100 Films in a Year 2019]
What Do You Mean You Haven't Seen...? 2019 #7
+ a featurette about the movie's filming locations, which also included interesting info about how some shots were achieved.

TV

Agatha Raisin
1x02 Hell's Bells [2nd watch]
1x03 The Wellspring of Death [2nd watch]

this week on 100 Films

After my holidays, I also returned to 100 Films in a Year this week...

Il blogger prodigo
Buongiorno, dear readers — the prodigal blogger has returned! (“Prodigal” being a word I’ve here misused, as I’m sure many of us do, thanks to that Biblical story. Though as it actually means “spending money freely and recklessly”, anyone who’s seen the size of my unwatched DVD and Blu-ray collection might consider it fitting after all.)

And posted 4 new reviews, in one handy post...

TV

Agatha Raisin
1x01 Walkers of Dembley [2nd watch]

The Twilight Zone
2x15 The Invaders

Films

Die Another Day (2002)
[4th or so watch]
Rewatchathon 2019 #21. I wasn't sure if I should count this -- I didn't join it until a little way in, and there were parts I only half watched. But I counted Skyfall under similar circumstances last year, so here it is.

Fiction

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison
Delusion for a Dragon Slayer

Collection Count

Collection Count tracks my DVD/Blu-ray collection via a number of statistics every week.

Just one new addition this week, but it's my first 3D + 4K Ultra HD combo pack, so that's exciting. I wish they'd do more of those. It's also time for the monthly running time update, though that's only noteworthy for its smallness: it's the lowest month-on-month increase in 9 months.

Number of titles in collection: 2,240 [up 1]
Of which DVDs: 1,132 [no change]
Of which Blu-rays: 1,108 [up 1]
— of which Ultra HD Blu-rays: 31 [up 1]

Number of discs in collection: 5,826 [up 3]
Number of films: 2,571 [up 1]
Number of TV episodes: 8,637 [no change]
Number of short films: 671 [no change]

Total running time of collection (approx.):
427 days and 10 minutes.
(Up 16 hours and 11 minutes from last month.)

See you next week, faithful reader.

Friday, 26 July 2019

TV

Agatha Raisin
1x00 The Quiche of Death [2nd watch]
With series 2 finally having aired in the UK, we're doing a bit of a catch-up before watching it.

The Twilight Zone
2x26 Shadow Play
After an unintentional break (I last watched an episode over 2 months ago), I'm resuming my potted viewing of the best-regarded episodes of this seminal sci-fi anthology.

Wednesday, 24 July 2019

TV

Peston
5x27 (24/7/2019 edition)
Apparently it was an "historic day" (that's what the newscasters kept saying, anyway), so I ended up watching a bunch of news coverage and topping it off with ITV's political discussion show.
[Watch it (again) on the ITV Hub.]

Year of the Rabbit
1x03 Episode 3
[Watch the entire series (again) on All 4.]
