Collection Count

Collection Count tracks my DVD/Blu-ray collection via a number of statistics every week.

The discs just keep coming: I added 11 titles to my collection this week, although a handful were upgrades so it washes out as +7 (the upgrades being Gattaca and Scott Pilgrim from BD to 4K, Big Fish from DVD to 4K(!), and the Up series (7 Up, etc) from DVD to BD. I also bought the Indiana Jones 4K set, but I'm hanging on to those Blu-rays. And DVDs. More fool me). Quite a few were box sets, too, so the number films and, especially, discs see even bigger jumps, even after taking out the upgrades.

Number of titles in collection: 2,640 [up 7]
Of which DVDs: 1,064 [down 2]
Of which Blu-rays: 1,576 [up 9]
— of which Ultra HD Blu-rays: 114 [up 5]

Number of discs in collection: 6,678 [up 21]
Number of films: 3,085 [up 15]
Number of additional cuts: 229 [up 3]
Number of TV episodes: 9,095 [up 13]
Number of short films: 872 [no change]

After a couple of busy weeks in a row, I've got nothing scheculed for next time... until I inevitably cave to a sale or something, anyway. See you then, faithful reader.

Collection Count

An even-more-belated-than-usual update this week, because it's time for the running time update and I had a whole month's worth of purchases to add in.

Plus, this week itself features another pretty large load of new additions. They include a couple of new releases on 4K (True Romance, The Babadook), a couple of new or recent releases on regular Blu-ray (The Day of the Dolphin, Son of the White Mare), and a few catchup releases from earlier in the year / the end of last year. But nothing from HMV's huge 20%-off sale... though it calls to me, so maybe next week.

Number of titles in collection: 2,633 [up 8]
Of which DVDs: 1,066 [no change]
Of which Blu-rays: 1,567 [up 8]
— of which Ultra HD Blu-rays: 109 [up 2]

Number of discs in collection: 6,657 [up 9]
Number of films: 3,070 [up 9]
Number of additional cuts: 226 [up 1]
Number of TV episodes: 9,082 [no change]
Number of short films: 872 [up 4]

Total running time of collection (approx.):
481 days, 2 hours, and 11 minutes.
(Up 1 day, 15 hours, and 56 minutes from last month.)

See you next week, faithful reader.

Films

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
[2nd watch]

I'm fairly certain I saw this as a kid — the earworm scene is lodged in my memory — but that's about all I did remember. So, it's a rewatch in technicality only, but there we go. It's the only pre-Generations Trek film I did see as a kid, I think, so I intend to give it the Guide To treatment on 100 Films to make sure the whole series is covered.

Fiction

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
Pages 217–288 [the end]

Considering I read the first 216 pages of this in a little over a week, I certainly didn't intend to wait over three months before reading the final 72. But an enforced short pause turned into a long pause, and here we are. Still, better late than never.

Oh, and it's a really good book, by the way.

Collection Count

This week's additions include a couple of imported 4K titles, both from France. First: Godzilla vs Kong, because it comes bundled with the film in 3D (I watched it in 4K when it came out and it looked great, so I did want that; but I also want it in 3D because it looked like it'd be great in 3D, and I have indeed heard good things). Second: The Limey, because France is the only country that got the recent 4K restoration on an actual 4K disc (there was just a regular Blu-ray here); plus it comes with a good number of special features (the UK BD has none), including an acclaimed commentary track.

Number of titles in collection: 2,625 [up 2]
Of which DVDs: 1,066 [no change]
Of which Blu-rays: 1,559 [up 2]

Moriarty the Patriot
1x01 The Earl's Crime
I discovered the existence of this anime entirely by accident, but I'm glad I did. It's a version of Sherlock Holmes in which Moriarty becomes the Lord of Crime in order to help balance an unjust society, seeking to punish noblemen for their crimes. This first episode is a bit pilot-y, but it still manages to tell a compelling and satisfying story, and the production quality is high all round. I'll definitely be sticking with the rest of the series.

This week brings a new addition to the Doctor Who: The Collection Blu-rays in the form of Season 24. I have them all on DVD too, of course, but I'm upgrading them with these Blu-rays — but only ditching the DVDs once all their special features have appeared in The Collection (some are being rearranged to more appropriate seasons). In the case of season 24, two of the stories still have an exclusive extra on the DVDs, so I'll keep them for now.

I also picked up a bunch of titles in HMV's Premium Collection sale, only one of which was also an upgrade, so there's all this going on:

Number of titles in collection: 2,622 [up 5]
Of which DVDs: 1,066 [down 3]
Of which Blu-rays: 1,556 [up 8]
— of which Ultra HD Blu-rays: 105 [no change]

this week on 100 Films

It's been an exceptionally quiet month on 100 Films in a Year, but this week I nonetheless presented my usual roundup of what went on...
