Eighth Grade (2018)
if you look past the modern milieu to the fundamental feelings underneath, they’re universal and speak across the generations. This is the most truthful movie about what it’s actually like to be a teenager I think I’ve ever seen. It really captures the uncomfortableness of being a not-popular teen, both for good (well done filmmakers, you conveyed your point) or ill (it can be as squirm-inducing as living the real thing).Read more here.

No new releases this week, but, once again, sales got me: there's a Criterion offer across most UK retailers right now, and that's hard to resist. Only two titles so far, but I expect I'll cave to some more (there's around 10–12 from my wish list still in the sale).

Every time I think things might get quiet, a sale or something comes along. Nine new additions is no record breaker, but it remains a pretty big number for a single week — and, thanks to multi-film sets, there are 17 new additions to my film watchlist. Oy... Only two of these are brand-new releases; two more were released within the last month, caught up on in a 2-for-£25 offer, while the other five were in a flash sale.
Maybe I'll manage to display some self control next week, eh...

Doctor Who: The Monthly Adventures
275x01 The End of the Beginning Part 1: Death and the Desert
The last-ever entry in Big Finish's monthly series of Doctor Who audios, which have been running since July 1999. It's the end of an era, and all that (it's not The End of Big Finish doing Who, they're just mixing up how they manage their releases). It's been years since I listened to a Big Finish release (though I still buy quite a few — oopsie), but as I was there listening at the start back in summer 1999, it felt only right to mark the end too. (Seems a shame they didn't end on a round number like 300, but then that would've required keeping this format they want to retire going for another two years, so fair enough I guess.)

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
The first film was a contained horror/thriller about one well-to-do family whose home comes under assault from a gang of Purge participants on the night in question. This first sequel ditches most of the Horror genre trappings to instead emulate ’70s B-actioners, in the vein of stuff like Assault on Precinct 13 or The Warriors, and it’s all the better for it.Read more here.

Collection Count
Collection Count tracks my DVD/Blu-ray collection via a number of statistics every week.
Having pushed the running time update back a week purely because I hadn't had time to update it, this week I got a whole pile of new titles. To be exact, there were 10 additions, though various upgrades keep the net change at +4. And the number of discs actually goes down, thanks to The World at War Blu-ray being an 8-disc upgrade to a 26-disc-version I owned on DVD. That wasn't even the most complicated-to-factor title, which only turned up yesterday morning. So this update is late, but it's complete!
Number of titles in collection: 2,553 [up 4]
Of which DVDs: 1,075 [down 6]
Of which Blu-rays: 1,478 [up 10]
— of which Ultra HD Blu-rays: 96 [no change]
Number of discs in collection: 6,524 [down 6]
Number of films: 2,963 [up 7]
Number of additional cuts: 210 [up 1]
Number of TV episodes: 9,052 [up 4]
Number of short films: 843 [no change]
Total running time of collection (approx.):
472 days, 16 hours, and 8 minutes.
(Up 4 days, 8 hours, and 11 minutes from last month.)
That's the biggest monthly increase since June 2019... although it does have five weeks in it, so that's kinda cheating, I guess.
See you next week, faithful reader.

Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home (2018)
This ad for Australian tourism, released back in 2018, initially got people excited because it looked like it was a trailer for a surprise fourth Crocodile Dundee movie. Eventually, the truth was revealed (I think during the Superbowl?) Anyway, they never released a 'complete' version — it only exists as a collection of four or five teasers/trailers/adverts, which you can find on YouTube edited together by just being stuck one after another. They tend to be called "extended version"s, but really it's just playing all the clips back to back. If they'd properly cut all the variants together into one complete version, I'd probably count it and review it as a short on 100 Films; but they didn't, so I'm just mentioning it here (and on Letterboxd).

Plus 2 new film reviews...
Creed II (2018)
The film’s title is, obviously, meant to be read “Creed 2” because it’s a follow-up to “Creed 1”, but if you chose to read it as “Creed the 2nd” it wouldn’t be inappropriate to the movie’s themes. This is a movie all about parents and children, what they owe to each other, and how they live up to that — or fail to. It’s a meaty subject to chew on, and [the film] examines it from almost every conceivable angle.Read more here.
Zatoichi in Desperation (1972)
The 24th and penultimate film in the original Zatoichi series is also the first to be directed by star Shintarô Katsu. Despite such fundamental creative control by the man who arguably knew the character best, it's widely regarded as one of the series’ worst instalments, and yet you’ll find some people full of praise for it. It’s one of the series’ darkest entries, and I suspect it’s unpopular overall because it’s so grim; but for those who do like it, they love it.Read more here.

It was supposed to be a new running time update this week, but it's been a busy month and a bunch of titles arrived just this morning, so I haven't found time to add it all up. That's bumped to next week, then. In the meantime, this week's pile of new arrivals: one recent release, and four sale pickups.

Muse: Simulation Theory (2020)
Often cited as one of the best live acts around, for their latest concert movie British rock band Muse have attempted something a bit different: rather than just footage of them performing songs in front of a massive audience, Simulation Theory attempts to tell a sci-fi narrative… driven by and/or interspersed with the band performing songs in front of a massive audience, natch.Read more here.

The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926)
[2nd watch]
Rewatchathon 2021 #4. This isn't just because I enjoyed it so much I watched it twice (although it is very good), but because the BFI Blu-ray has a choice of soundtracks: the first is the original 1926 musical score; the second is an English voiceover narration recorded in 2013 but based on the director's original text. Really, the latter wasn't worth bothering with (I wrote a little more about that on Letterboxd).

When the Wind Blows (1986)
[#31 in 100 Films in a Year 2021]
+ the commentary by first assistant editor John Fordham and film historian Nick Redman ("first assistant editor" sounds like a bit of a lowly position to be doing the commentary, but Fordham was there for most of production and seems to know a fair bit — it's not a bad track), and the interview with Raymond Briggs (insightful into the original conception of the characters, including how he had to make them "fairly dim" in order to slavishly follow the "lunatic" official advice!)

Collection Count
Collection Count tracks my DVD/Blu-ray collection via a number of statistics every week.
Last week I said this week might challenge some of the record-breakers from last year. In the end, due to stuff getting lost in the post or not arriving as quickly as expected, it's not quite at that level — but it's still a relatively big'un, with 11 all-new titles, containing 15 films (no multi-film sets, just a bunch of extra films as special features!) and 38 episodes of TV, plus a pile of short films too. Sadly, nothing on Ultra HD or DVD, and no additional cuts, otherwise every single stat would've gone up. Hey-ho, you can't have it all!
