I mentioned last time that this post would take a bit of work, because I'm massively behind on adding new acquisitions to my database, which means they're not easily factored in to the total running time — and (as is perhaps obvious) it's time for an update on that. Plus, I was away all of yesterday, so that hardly helped.
Anyway, slightly delayed, here it all is: this week's average-ish pile of new additions (by my standards — this many new additions every week shouldn't really be "average"!), plus the monthly check-in on the length of my collection.

Eurovision Song Contest: Liverpool 2023
Grand Final
A great show on the whole, even if I didn't understand the winner at all (it was a perfectly adequate song, but there were so many other better or more interesting ones, so I don't get why it was such a runaway hit). On the bright side, it means a return to Sweden, who last time they hosted gave us one of the greatest Eurovision moments of all time. No pressure for 2024, guys...

As you might guess from the title, BBC One's early evening magazine programme The One Show has been in Liverpool all week to cover Eurovision. I didn't realise how much coverage they'd given it — I assumed it would be little bits here and there, but actually it dominated each episode, with only an interview or short feature per episode deviating. So I caught up on all of that earlier today.
It's not just me who's spent most of the day in a Eurovision bubble, though: the actual BBC One schedule dedicated 8 hours to Eurovision-related programming throughout the afternoon & evening! It began with a repeat of last week's Ultimate Guide, there was then a repeat of last year's Weakest Link tie-in special, followed by new tie-in editions of Pointless Celebrities and The Hit List. So, mostly themed specials of game shows, then. I decided to skip all of that (I did have some other things to do), but joined for The One Show countdown to the main event.

Another more-than-healthy pile of new arrivals this week, almost all brand-new releases (to be exact, almost half of these titles have been out for a while, but they were bundled in a preorder with something that's out next week, so my copies have only just turned up).
Also in this batch: 4K releases of the two 1970s Musketeers films, upgrading a BD doublepack. I massively enjoyed those films when I first saw them a few years ago (I checked: it was 2011. Twelve years ago is my idea of "recently"), so looking forward to revisiting them in 4K.

I assumed it was very similar to something I couldn’t place; I never expected the answer to be “it finished 20th on Eurovision last year”. Wonders will never cease.

The Coronation Concert
Nearly skipped this — it doesn't have the historical weight of the coronation itself, and these kinds of concerts can be mediocre shows of "who could we book?" But, actually, I'm glad I did, because there were various highlights worth seeing — the Shakespeare collaboration; the drone light shows; the Muppets are always fun. Altogether, worth the time.

My copy of this much-anticipated new Bond novel (novella, really) turned up today — better than some people, I hear, because Amazon have predicted delivery dates weeks in the future, even for preorders. Shame, especially as it actually starts on May 4th, the release day. Well, so the marketing emphasised — that's actually a flashforward, with the main action beginning back in March. Probably for the best — the coronation tie-in plot could already be a bit gimmicky, so not actually leaning into a "read it in real-time" gimmick as well is good.

Well, "every week" has gone slightly out the window this time: this update should've been posted last Saturday, but I've been too busy to work out the additions (the final result may look simple, but there were a few "am I replacing that DVD?" issues to consider), and so it's gradually slipped until it's almost a full 7 days late. I'm sure no one cares — I could just post a new update tomorrow and be done with — but, well, I care. A little bit.
So, here's the final update for April — only about 15 hours short of being an entire week late compared to its usual posting time. But nothing new arrived in that time, so it's still accurate to last Saturday. But a bunch of stuff is going to arrive tomorrow morning, so I still intend to post another "weekly" update over the weekend. Yeah, I buy too much stuff...

Perfect way to spend a Bank Holiday weekend: a Lord of the Rings film each day, all in 4K quality. As I said about Fellowship, the lack of grain only bothered me a few times, while several bits looked extra-spectacular thanks to the HDR colours.

I go back and forth on my feelings about Two Towers almost every time I watch it. No doubt it has phenomenal bits — some of my most favourite lines, shots, scenes, and characters from the entire trilogy are to be found here. But I’ve often found it to be, overall, a bit of a slog — a film that takes a long time to get going, and which frequently undermines its own flow by doing things like intercutting the phenomenal Helms Deep battle with the deathly-dull Entmoot. Even when I try to mentally prepare myself for that unevenly slow pace, it still sometimes grates. Well, for whatever reason, this is one of the times it didn’t. So that’s nice.

I haven't watched Lord of the Rings since before Covid? Huh — seems like it would've been the perfect thing for lockdown. Mind you, so would the Godfather trilogy, which I've been meaning to rewatch for about 20 years, and I haven't done that either, so...
Part of the reason for the delay was waiting for the 4K versions, then waiting for them to do the 4K release properly, which never happened, so then waiting for the 4K release to be on sale... Finally, I'm there. Worth it? On balance, yeah. The way it’s been scrubbed of grain was occasionally noticeable and disappointing, but overall it looked fab, especially the HDR grade.

Forever and a Day by Anthony Horowitz
Chapter 19
I started reading this in February 2022 with the intention of finishing it well before Horowitz's third (and final) Bond novel came out in May 2022 — but here we are in bloomin' April 2023, basically a whole year later than I'd intended to finish. And now there's another Bond novel on the horizon (Charlie Higson's On His Majesty's Secret Service, out in nine days), which set me a new deadline (I want to read that as soon as I get it).
And it's not as if I have a mass of the novel left to go, just 54 pages (now 45). I despair of myself; I really need to devote more time to reading.

This month's additions include Masters of Cinema's Early Murnau box set — something I've had half an eye on since it came out, but I already owned most of its contents on DVD. But now it's going out of print (it's already sold out on their website), so I finally snapped it up. That results in some shenanigans below, what with it being a single release containing three discs and five films that replaces three titles containing four discs and four films.

This month's additions include Masters of Cinema's Early Murnau box set — something I've had half an eye on since it came out, but I already owned most of its contents on DVD. But now it's going out of print (it's already sold out on their website), so I finally snapped it up. Back in February, when I popped in The Collection: Season 2 - Disc 3 to watch the first part of The Rescue, I didn't intend to stick with season 2 for so long. I'd wanted to watch The Romans, and decided I may as well first watch the preceding two-parter that introduced Vicki; and when I realised The Web Planet came next, it seemed about time that I finally watched such an infamous story. Then I noticed I was within shouting distance of (a) the earliest Dalek story I'd not seen, which (b) was also Ian and Barbara's exit, and so it seemed only right to continue to that point. If I hadn't, I would've just gone off and found some other stories I'd not seen to watch next, so it may as well be these ones.
But now, I'm at the end of that. There is only one more story in season 2, The Time Meddler, but I only watched that fairly recently (almost three years ago, in fact, but that's "recent" in my perception of time), so I won't watch it again right now. But I might only skip ahead by one, because the season 3 premiere was Galaxy 4, and I've not watched the animated reconstruction of that yet...

Now that this has settled into being a drama about pirates (as opposed to the first couple of episodes, which were setup and backstory), it's more or less exactly what I wanted it to be (i.e. piratical adventures) and pretty darn enjoyable. No offence to audio drama as a medium, but I imagine it would make a fun TV show (I probably ought to get round to Black Sails, eh?)

Romero's Martin doesn't usurp the old Arrow DVD from my collection because that has unique special features, but elsewise, I switched out 88 Films' BD of Dragons Forever for their 4K release, and their older BD of Snake & Crane Arts of Shaolin for a remastered one (I've never seen either film, but I got a good discount); plus StudioCanal's 4K reissue of The City of Lost Children turned up a few days early. That's a title I've owned on DVD and Blu-ray, and now 4K, but never actually seen. More fool me.

Eight new additions this week, but a mix of upgrades keeps the final tally lower. The big one was Doctor Who season 9, which (for the time being) removes two DVDs (it'll be more once some special features turn up on future releases). I also upgraded John Wick 1 and 2 to 4K, so that's two BDs replaced by a 4K set. And I upgraded Red Eye right from DVD (which I only bought, cheap, a decade ago, because a Blu-ray wasn't forthcoming and I wanted to rewatch it. That disc has never entered a player) to its new 4K release (I will rewatch it this time! I will!)
Anyway, that means that, despite this veritable pile of new stuff sat next to me ony my desk, the net change to titles is only +3.

2x29 The Final Phase
aka The Space Museum Part Four, the finale. On the whole, this serial certainly lives down to its reputation. Potentially interesting concepts are tossed away after being barely discussed, never mind explored, paired with a half-arsed rote revolution plotline and dull, poorly-performed villains. Yawn.
+ Defending the Museum, a nine-minute extra in which Dalek and Big Finish writer Robert Shearman explains his love for the serial, though even he admits it has good bits that are drowned out by poor execution.

aka The Crusade Part Four — both the serial's finale and the second of its two missing episodes.
As a whole, there's a lot I like about The Crusade, and I enjoy each episode individually. Unfortunately, it doesn’t add up as a whole; primarily, the pace across all four parts is off, and some of the storylines are ultimately too slight or told in a rush. It’s literally less than the sum of its parts.

Doesn't really matter, but still feels daft. (Even dafter would be to 'correct' it by rewatching only certain episodes. I might be barmy, but I'm not that barmy.)

Never would've guessed it was that long. I didn't stop because I didn't like it — indeed, quite the opposite: I think Tennant is actually quite a good interviewer, creating a casual atmosphere that encourages his interviewee to open up with an honesty you don't usually get on chat shows — I just don't really 'do' podcasts, so only think to listen to it once in a blue moon, when I can't sleep but don't have the awakeness to read or watch anything, or something like that.
Anyway, rather than continue to continue through them in order, I skipped ahead slightly to a particularly interesting-sounding episodes. The interview with Sheen was recorded after Good Omens wrapped filming but before it aired, so long before Staged and the like came along. It's like a little time capsule.

The Best of the Best Bits
It's years since I last watched a full Comic Relief (2015, this blog tells me). Indeed, as the best bits segment showed to me, I haven't even watched some of the headline sketches from the last few iterations. But this year promised a few good-looking bits, and I think it mostly delivered. Didn't start well, with a next-to-pointless Doctor Who bit (less a sketch, more a single gag), but at least it recovered with (in particular) Ghosts, The Traitors, Baldrick's bedtime story, the Eurovision auditions, and that musical number about Comic Relief history.
