Mystery Science Theater 3000
13x06 Demon Squad
13x02 Robot Wars Post-Premiere Q&A

Keeping up my pace of only watching one new MST3K per month, apparently (I thought it had been longer than that and I was even more behind than I am, to be honest. Still need to catch up, though: episode 8 premiered last night). This one seems to have gone down well with fans, although I suspect that has more to do with the return of Joel as host than the episode itself. I didn't think it was bad — a few riffs even had me laughing out loud — but not that inspired overall.

Afterwards, I finally got round to going back to episode 2 and watching the Q&A from its (second) premiere (as I did with episode 1). I quite enjoy these chaotic live Zoom-chat-esque post-shows, so I'll keep watching them — I've got episode 3's to catch up on, plus all the future premieres, of course.

That was more accessible. Plus, a TARDIS reference! Yay!

CinemaCon 2012: The Hobbit Underwhelms At 48 Frames Per Second
by Devin Faraci (from Badass Digest)
Footage from the forthcoming Hobbit adaptations has been screened in its much-heralded higher framerate of 48fps, and the results aren't good. "It is drenched in a TV-like -- specifically 70s era BBC -- video look. People on Twitter have asked if it has that soap opera look you get from badly calibrated TVs... and the answer is an emphatic YES." Oh dear. More detail at the link.

MST3K: The Movie (UK) in June
by Dave Foster (from The Digital Fix: Film)
Not only is the Mystery Science Theater 3000 movie coming out in the UK (which is a surprise), and not only is it coming out on Blu-ray (which is a surprise), but it's got extras too (which is a surprise). So I'm very surprised, but very happy about it. June 11th is the date; exactly £12 is the (current) best price for the BD.

Chris Rock: Selective Outrage
Netflix's first-ever foray into live broadcasting is this Chris Rock stand-up special, the promo for which relied heavily (as far as I saw) on the fact he was going to talk about The Slap for the first time — the broadcast cannily timed to be just one week before this year's Oscars. Perfect (for viewing figures).

Well, I don't know how good the figures were; the comedy was alright. I'm often not a fan of American stand-up, and Rock is one of its key figures, but I laughed at a few bits and was tickled at others. By far the best material was related to The Slap, though — a couple of references dropped here and there, and then a full-on assault in the final 10 minutes. It's what we came for, and we got what we wanted.

Netflix also teed things up and played it out with half-hour The Show Before the Show and The Show After the Show livestreams. Apparently these won't be available on the recorded version of the special, which is largely fine (the question of archiving media aside) because they didn't offer too much of value.

[Watch it (again) on Netflix.]

Mystery Science Theater 3000
13x08 The Batwoman
I was "a little behind" on MST3K season 13 for a while, but it's now been over six months since I last watched an episode — a combination of trying to devote time to finishing my 100 Films Challenge at the end of 2022, and then just getting out of the habit. So, hopefully I'll now begin to watch them more regularly and finish off the five remaining episodes. I thought this was quite a good one — a clearly-ridiculous underlying film, scattered with decent riffs.

this week on 100 Films

3 new reviews were posted to 100 Films in a Year this week, and they were...

It Happened Here (1965)
depicting a 1940s Britain under Nazi occupation [using] a dramatic narrative, as opposed to faux-documentary, to show off their vision of an occupied Britain... shot in grainy, handheld black-and-white with a rough-round-the-edges feel that gives it the air of documentary even when it’s undoubtedly scripted and performed.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie (1996)
it’s a bit like a DVD commentary, except instead of people involved with the film recounting anecdotes or academics offering analysis, we have people taking the piss out of it... The experience is very much like watching a movie with some mates when you’re in the mindset to take the piss out of the film.

Panic in the Streets (1950)
not a particularly film noir-y film noir. That’s not a problem, just an observation. There’s still a criminal underworld, a (slightly) downtrodden hero, criminal wrongdoings, some shadow-drenched photography, and a smattering of other traits that do place it within the genre, but it’s not a textbook example.

More next Sunday.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: 20th Anniversary Edition
A beautiful tin containing four episodes of MST3K and some other goodies. It looks super-lovely. Unfortunately, it seems to be impossible to actually get the contents out of the tin... I'll let you know if I ever manage it.

11x02 Cry Wilderness

“I’m afraid this movie might not be very good...”

So, I said I'd jump ahead to better-regarded episodes, but it turned out I didn't have to jump at all: Cry Wilderness seems to be widely regarded as the best episode of MST3K: The Return (aka season 11), and it also happens to be episode 2, so I haven't had to watch anything out of sequence. Hurrah! Unlike the first episode, this one hits the ground running and maintains a pretty consistent level from there. It was enough to convince me to back the Kickstarter.

Mystery Science Theater 3000
Jackbox Holiday Showdown: Hosts vs Mads
I haven't watched any MST3K since September (oops), leaving me with almost half (6 out of 13) of the current season still to watch (oops). And the finale is a Christmas special, too, so by the time I get round to that in, like, June it'll be thoroughly out of date. Or maybe it'll take me all of 2023 to get caught up and I'll just watch it a year late, who knows? Anyway, this isn't an episode, either, but a livestream special in which the cast compete at Christmas-themed party games. Fun times.

Jackbox Showdown... Crow vs Servo
13x03 Beyond Atlantis Post-Premiere Q&A

Wasn't sure I was awake enough for a film late last night, but instead wound up watching all two hours of the replay of the Jackbox Showdown livestream special. Oh well. It's quite fun, but would've been more fun to join in live (I wasn't able to when it happened, unfortunately).

And talking of watching replays, this evening I finished off those premiere Q&As... except for the ones on episodes I haven't watched. It's nice there are more to look forward to.

Luther
2x01 Episode 1
I wasn't sure we'd see the return of Luther, but here it is, in rejigged form as two two-parters. Which would seem to lend itself to the Sunday/Monday broadcast recently afforded Case Histories, but for some reason they've scheduled it across four Tuesdays. Each to their own. Anyway, the rejig they've made so much of in the press running up to the series isn't very significant. Sure, characters are gone and new ones are here, and some of the relationships have changed, but the series still feels the same and functions in the same way. So it's still as awkward, weird, sick, but strangely likeable.
[Watch it (again) in HD on iPlayer.]

Mystery Science Theater 3000
4x24 "Manos" The Hands of Fate [season finale]
Having enjoyed the MST3k movie last year, I decided to start my viewing of the series with perhaps the most famous episode, in which the Satellite of Love gang riff off one of the worst movies of all time. And it truly is a dreadful movie... and, unfortunately, doesn't seem to give them much to work with. It has its moments as an episode, but there were too many long stretches without notable funnies. Though fans do say not to start newbies with this episode, so...
(Incidentally, MST3k follows Family Guy and Robot Chicken as my... I don't know what, really, but it's filling their void. Sure, they had 22-minute and 11-minute episodes respectively, while MST3k runs 90 minutes per episode, but I watched big chunks of the other two, so it kinda works out.)

Mystery Science Theater 3000
11x01 Reptilicus

“Something is rotten in the state of Denmark... and it’s this movie!”

With a new MST3K Kickstarter underway, I figured I should finally watch episode(s) from the last one, (a) because I should've got round to them ages ago, and (b) to see if I want to back this new Kickstarter. This one... left me unsure. You see, I always really like the idea of MST3K in theory, but I feel like whenever I actually watch it I’m less convinced. There’s a sense of “throw anything at the wall and hope some of it sticks” about the jokes, rather than the constant barrage of zingers that you’d ideally find. But some of it does stick, so...

Anyway, apparently this is one of the weaker episodes of the revival season, so I might jump ahead to some I've heard are better, to let it put its best foot forward.

So much for watching MST3K more regularly (it's been almost four months), but, hey, there's no season 14 in sight (yet), so I'll get there eventually (only four more to go now).

Dollhouse Robbery? The Truth Behind the "Missing" Episode by Matt Mitovich
(from TV Guide)
I'm not even watching Dollhouse (awaiting a UK broadcast like a good boy), but this has been an interesting story that -- unsurprisingly -- has a far less sinister truth behind it than most were assuming.
Random Wikipedia trivia: "Episodes of Dollhouse are about six minutes longer than standard one-hour dramas on US network television, as the show airs with half as many commercial advertising slots."

New Red Dwarf pulls in over 2 million by Neil Wilkes
(from Digital Spy)
"The return of Red Dwarf for its first new episode in ten years was a huge hit for Dave... The first episode of a three-part reunion special, Red Dwarf: Back To Earth, pulled in 2.06m (10%) [and] a further 341k (1.9%) watched at 10pm." Apparently Dave's usual ratings are around the 250k mark, so this is clearly a great success. The total will go up later too, as this doesn't include those who recorded it to watch later.
"The success of Red Dwarf helped Dave to a primetime share of 3.2%, making it the most popular multichannel station of the night by a margin of almost one share point." It also beat BBC Two and Five in the ratings, and came relatively close to BBC One and Channel 4 too.
Let's hope this success continues tonight and tomorrow -- it's ratings and DVD sales that will dictate if we get more.

Tom & Crow’s Unsupervised Year-End Review Revue
The final livestream of the season is a clip-filled whistlestop recap of the first year of the Gizmoplex. As well as trailers for all 13 episodes of season 13, plus a selection of highlight clips, it also covered other goings-on — things like game nights, classic episode remasters, and aftershow interviews. At 40 minutes it was a pretty quick and fairly concise recap, but that's a good thing really — seeing as it was primarily a selection of trailers for and clips from things most viewers will have already seen, making it much longer could’ve been excruciating.

Catching up now, before episode five's premiere tonight... which does mean I don't really feel like watching that later. Oh well. I'm glad they're keeping the full live premiere events available to stream afterwards, because I enjoy the post-screening Q&As (I still need to go back and watch episode two's, which had a 'double premiere' a la episode one).

Mystery Science Theater 3000
13x01 Santo in the Treasure of Dracula
The new season of MST3K began with a Kickstarter-backers-exclusive premiere last night — 1am UK time, hence me logging it today. After a few technical issues delayed the start, the episode itself was a delight: a perfect movie to be laughed at while still being kinda daftly enjoyable, which, for me, is the MST3K sweetspot (truly awful movies sometimes feel like a slog that the riffers didn't have enough to work with). If they keep up this standard, it should be a good season.

House of the Dragon
1x02 The Rogue Prince

Mystery Science Theater 3000
13x07 Gamera vs Jiger
They’ve mentioned repeatedly on the post-episode-premiere Q&As how hard the writers found this one, due to having to riff an entire movie with no leeway to cut for time or repetition (which they do on all the other films they cover), and I feel like that comes across in the final episode. There are some great riffs (the songs; the running gag about the little girl’s bloodthirstiness), but also longer-than-usual periods of silence and some stuff that was a bit too esoteric. By no means a disaster, but not among the best the season has had to offer.
